This role covers two key areas: Patron Services & Circulation and Programming & Community Engagement.
In Patron Services & Circulation, you'll greet patrons warmly, assist with checking materials in and out, and register new library cardholders. You'll manage fines and maintain accurate records. You'll also assist with daily opening and closing procedures, collect items from the book drop, and help organize our collections. You'll need to become proficient with our Library Integrated System (ILS) and other essential software like Google Suite. You'll also guide patrons in accessing and using our online resources, including Overdrive and Libby, across various devices. Additionally, you'll help process new library materials and update existing holdings through cataloging and preparing items for the shelves, and perform basic repairs on damaged library items.
For Programming & Community Engagement, you'll collaborate with the Library Director and other assistants in planning and executing diverse library programs for all ages. You'll support special projects, events, and outreach initiatives, including creating engaging flyers and signage. You'll also contribute to our social media presence by creating posts and content on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Canva, and assist with other promotional activities.
Beyond these main areas, your General Duties will include processing payments for fines, lost materials, and other items, issuing receipts and managing change. You'll actively participate in staff meetings, contributing ideas and staying informed about library plans. You'll also assist with general tidiness and cleanliness of the library, including opening and closing duties and ensuring building security. Finally, you'll engage in relevant continuing education opportunities.
We're looking for someone with a high school diploma or GED equivalent, plus at least one year of closely related experience.
For Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities, you should have familiarity with general library operations, including circulation, basic classification (like Dewey Decimal System), and reference services. An understanding of various types of library materials and patron interests across different age groups is a plus. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with people of all ages are essential. You should also have proficiency in general clerical tasks, working accurately and efficiently. The ability to understand and follow instructions, working both independently and as part of a team, is important. Comfort with various office machines and equipment, along with a basic understanding of online content applications such as Instagram, Facebook, and Canva, are also desired.
Your Work Environment will be an indoor setting with climate control. The role involves a variety of physical activities, including standing, walking, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting. Good vision, hearing, and dexterity are required for most duties.
