Job Overview
The Tire & Wheel Technician (Tire Tech) is responsible for overseeing all activities in the installation shop, ensuring tire installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement meet safety and performance standards. This role involves working with various vehicle systems, handling inventory, and maintaining shop tools and equipment. The technician will also provide quality customer service and manage administrative tasks related to tire and wheel installations.
Key Responsibilities
- Tire Installation & Replacement
- Install and replace tires on various vehicles, including passenger cars, trucks, and other machinery.
- Balance tires to ensure proper weight distribution and smooth operation.
- Inspect tire condition and recommend replacements if necessary.
Tire Repair
- Repair tire punctures and other damage by patching and sealing.
- Perform wheel alignment checks and adjustments.
- Replace damaged tire valves, sensors, or other components.
Maintenance & Inspection
- Conduct routine tire checks and inspections for wear, tear, and safety standards.
- Inspect and adjust tire pressure as required.
- Ensure that tires meet all safety requirements and manufacturer specifications.
Inventory Management
- Oversee inventory, including placing orders, checking in merchandise, labeling items, and organizing products for customer use.
- Handle "Return to Vendor" products when necessary and maintain a system for storing used tires.
- Control parts spending and track merchandise deliveries.
Customer Service
- Provide customers with tire recommendations based on their vehicle specifications and needs.
- Offer advice on tire care, maintenance, and performance.
- Answer questions and address concerns regarding tire installations and replacements.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Operate tire-changing equipment, such as tire balancing machines, alignment tools, and air compressors.
- Regularly clean and maintain tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow safety protocols to minimize accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
- Comply with local environmental regulations regarding tire disposal.
- Ensure all tire installations meet industry standards and manufacturer guidelines.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; certification in automotive or tire technology is a plus.
- Experience: Previous experience as a tire technician, automotive technician, or in a similar role is preferred. Familiarity with tire types (radial, bias-ply, off-road) and vehicle systems (suspension, alignment, braking) is beneficial.
- Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude with good manual dexterity.
- Ability to operate power tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in tire installations.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and carry heavy tires (up to 50 lbs).
- Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and physical labor in a demanding environment.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions, if working outdoors.
Other Requirements
- Valid State Driver's License with a clean driving history.
Work Hours & Compensation
- Work Hours: Full-time, with flexible hours, including weekends.
- Compensation: From $17.00 per hour based on experience, plus commissions & benefits (health insurance, paid time off, retirement plan).
- Successful completion of a drug screen and background check are required for employment.
