Job Description

Adoption Center Veterinarian – Make an Immediate Impact on Animal Welfare

Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) has been dedicated to giving animals second chances. As one of the largest and most impactful animal welfare organizations in the Midwest, we provide lifesaving care to thousands of animals each year across our St. Louis shelters.

We are seeking a mission-driven veterinarian with an interest or experience in shelter medicine who is also passionate about educating veterinary students and supporting staff development.

What you'll do:

  • Along with our Director of Shelter Medicine, provide high-quality examinations, diagnoses, and clinical/surgical treatments for animals within both of our shelters.
  • Oversee veterinary aspects of Licensed Veterinary Technicians serving as veterinary extenders.
  • Train, guide, and assist staff with duties, including proper use of equipment and materials.
  • Participate in educating veterinary students in an elective shelter medicine clinical rotation.
  • Assist the Director of Shelter Medicine with preparing forensic medical reports for abused or neglected animals and, when needed, testify in court concerning the examination and treatment of shelter or confiscated animals.
  • Thoroughly document and maintain accurate medical records and surgical logs.
  • Prepare and maintain medical, surgical, and drug logs in compliance with State of Missouri regulations, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), USDA, AMCMA, and HSMO requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Shelter Medicine and Director of Veterinary Services to address potential liability cases, ensuring quality standards and reducing risks.
  • Contribute to euthanasia decisions and oversee proper euthanasia procedures.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with staff and the organization as a whole.

What we are looking for:

  • Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine
  • Two to five years of experience in veterinary medicine, with a focus on shelter medicine preferred.
  • MO State Veterinary License, along with State and Federal Controlled Substance Licenses, and State and Federal Veterinary Accreditations.
  • Familiarity with the use of electronic medical records, general word processing and spreadsheet programs. Experience with Chameleon shelter software is helpful but not required.

Why You'll Love It Here

  • No clients to deal with, just patients!
  • No surgery.
  • Work with a dedicated, animal-loving team that celebrates every adoption as a victory.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive health, dental, life, disability and vision insurance.
  • 403(b) Retirement savings plan
  • Paid time off, including vacation, sick leave and holidays, so you can recharge.
  • Continuing education allowance to keep your skills sharp and current.
  • The joy of seeing your patients leave healthy, happy, and headed to loving homes.

If you are ready to change lives every single day, we'd love to meet you!
