Job Title: R&D Staff Scientist

Job Summary:

The R&D Scientist leads the development and validation of veterinary and human diagnostic tests while following ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485: 2016 USDA, and FDA regulatory procedures. The R&D Staff Scientist will manage new internal and external product development, design and execute experiments, and mentor lab Associates and Technicians.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs and executes experiments
  • Develops immunoassays including ELISAs, lateral flow, and other assay formats
  • USDA Licensing Activities
  • FDA Clearance Activities
  • Identifies, develops, purifies and characterizes recombinant, synthetic and native proteins and peptides
  • Cultures cells, viruses, parasites, and bacteria
  • Amplifies, clones, and expresses nucleic acids; designs PCR primers/probes
  • Performs monoclonal antibody techniques - hybridoma fusion, screening, production, characterization and purification
  • Develops and validates processes for transfer from R&D to manufacturing
  • Collects, analyzes, interprets, and presents data
  • Operates within an ISO 9001:2015 and/or ISO 13485:2016 Quality Management System
  • Follows all policies, protocols, and SOPs
  • Develops and updates SOPs as needed
  • Evaluates new technologies and procedures
  • Maintains current knowledge of industry trends/technologies and scientific literature
  • Mentors R&D Associates and Technicians
  • Manages internal R&D projects, holding team members accountable to time constraints
  • Manages projects with outsourced partners

Desired Qualifications and Experiences:

  • 3+ years' experience in immunoassay development (laboratory and/or point of care)
  • 5+ years' work experience in a regulated industry (ISO, USDA, FDA, GMP/GLP)
  • Demonstrated competence in experimental design, problem solving, analytics, leadership, coaching, project management and collaboration
  • Experience with USDA CVB Product Licensing process and/or FDA Clearance process

Education, Licenses and Certifications:

  • Advanced degree in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, or related field or equivalent experience

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to move 50 lbs.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
  • Ability to travel periodically (10-20%)
  • Ability to work on-site in Pullman, WA

Pay Range Data:

  • The pay range for this position is $58k-$81k annually. We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the pay range may differ if filled at a different level. Our pay ranges are determined by job responsibility and regional benchmarks. The wage listed is just one component of VMRD's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include bonuses.
