Position Overview: The role of the scribe is to assist the physician with documentation of the patient's medical record. This role ensures a seamless patient experience by facilitating effective communication and allowing the physician to focus on patient care.

Responsibilities:

  1. Documentation and Records Management:
  • Accurately and thoroughly document medical notes, patient histories, and examination findings during the patient's visit.
  • Record details of surgical consultations, including pre-operative and post-operative instructions.
  • Maintain patient charts and records, ensuring all entries meet compliance standards.
Communication Support:
  • Act as a liaison between the physician, patients, and other medical staff.
  • Clarify instructions provided by the physician to the patient and ensure patient understanding.
  • Coordinate communication with external entities, such as pharmacies, labs, or referring physicians.
Preparation and Follow-Up:
  • Prepare examination rooms, equipment, and instruments prior to patient visits.
  • Assist in retrieving diagnostic results, including imaging or laboratory reports, for physician review.
  • Follow up on physician orders, including referrals or prescription documentation.
Technical Assistance:
  • Operate electronic health records (EHR) systems to input, retrieve, and manage data.
  • Assist the ophthalmologist during minor in-office procedures by recording notes and providing ancillary support.
Compliance and Confidentiality:
  • Ensure adherence to HIPAA and other regulatory requirements in maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Stay updated on industry standards and best practices for medical documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; additional coursework or certification in medical terminology or scribing preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a medical or ophthalmology practice is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of medical terminology, particularly related to ophthalmology.
    • Proficiency in EHR systems and computer applications.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational abilities.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Work Environment:

  • Primary work is conducted in an office or clinical setting.
  • Frequent use of computers and medical equipment.
  • Interaction with patients, requiring a professional demeanor and compassionate communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity to operate office and medical equipment.
