Job Title: Diesel Mechanic

Department: Maintenance

Reports to: Director of Maintenance

FLSA Status: Hourly Non-Exempt

Pay: Starting pay $27.31 / Pay Increase after 6 months $27.57

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This is a maintenance position requiring considerable technical knowledge and mechanical skills to accomplish a variety of complex repairs and servicing. There is frequent heavy lifting and positioning of parts and equipment necessitating strength and flexibility. This work requires exposure to all weather conditions, cleaning agents, fuels, lubricants, fumes and other chemicals and dust. The Mechanic must have the ability to understand technical manuals and diagrams use the necessary tools and equipment in a competent manner, while performing jobs in a safe manner. The Mechanic shall complete records and document tasks completed, assist with the overall maintenance of the GPMTD building and grounds.

 

PREREQUISITES

  • Have a valid Illinois Driver's License for at least (2) years, a good record and the ability to obtain the required CDL with air brake, combination vehicle and passenger endorsements. Will be responsible for moving buses throughout the maintenance shop.
  • At least two (2) years verifiable experience in repairing, adjusting, and replacing components on heavy-duty buses and/or trucks.
  • Completion of the EP 608 and 609 certifications before the end of the probationary period.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be a team player and have a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check.

 

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Performs mechanical maintenance on GPMTD transit buses, support vehicles and operating facilities. Processes mailings for various marketing projects, such as newsletters and calendars.
  • Responsible for trouble shooting mechanical problems, repairing malfunctioning parts and systems, performing short- and long-term preventative maintenance, determining the need for parts and the time needed to complete each task.
  • Have full set of hand tools as outlined by the District and be skilled in operation of all tools and equipment required to perform repairs and adjustments necessary to keep fleet and equipment in excellent condition.
  • Possess complete understanding of engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, brakes, chassis, suspension, air system, bulkhead and steering.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of standing are required.
  • Often need to lift heavy parts and equipment, so physical strength and endurance are important.
  • Working with heavy equipment and machinery poses so follow safety protocols and use protective gear.
  • Working with tools and machinery requires good hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

 

GENERAL WORKING HOURS

Position requires some flexibility in scheduled working hours.
