FUNCTION: The Civil/Structural Engineer is responsible for performing structural engineering design, analysis and documentation in support of engineered systems, equipment, and facilities developed by James Fisher Technologies. This role contributes to the development of structural solutions that support project requirements, regulatory compliance, and safe operation within nuclear, industrial, and government environments. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, the Civil Structural Engineer develops structural calculations, specifications, and design documentation while coordinating with mechanical, systems, and project engineers to ensure structural elements are effectively integrated into overall project designs. The role also supports design reviews, technical evaluations, and engineering deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.

 

REPORTING TO: Analysis Lead

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Structural Design and Engineering:

  • Perform structural design and analysis of steel structures, equipment supports, lifting structures, concrete structures, foundations, and anchorage systems.
  • Ensure compliance with appropriate codes and standards (AISC, ACI, ASCE, ASME, NQA-1).
  • Perform analysis using hand calculations and engineering analysis software such as: RISA, STAAD, ANSYS, SAP2000.
  • Evaluate loads including dead, live, seismic, wind, thermal, and equipment loads.
  • Contribute to the development of analysis reports, technical documentation, and DOE deliverables.
  • Review design documents and customer specifications for constructability.
  • Participates in all phases of engineering design projects, from conceptual design through test and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to inform design decisions with actionable analysis outputs.
  • Author and check calculation packages for support structures.
  • Utilize bounding assumptions to simplify the analysis.
  • Utilize judgment to minimize the number of load cases required.
  • Advanced solid modeling: Autodesk Inventor to create parametric solid models for analysis for Engineering drawings and design packages.
  • Participate in 30%, 60%, 90%, and 100% design reviews.
  • Analyze production methods and systems to identify opportunities for cost reduction, automation, and optimization.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work on a computer (standing or sitting) for most of the day and use standard office equipment. The ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with team members, customers and vendors is essential. Will lift and carry objects, materials, or equipment, typically under 50 pounds. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing and crawling to access and inspect equipment or systems may also be necessary.

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily a shop environment with work regularly performed in the fabrication/machine shop and outdoor testing areas. JFT has implemented a 9/80 work schedule, and the office is closed every other Friday.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain.
  • Minimum 5+ years of structural engineering experience, with a focus on structural analysis, seismic loading of concrete and steel structures.
  • Knowledge of drawing principles and standards, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Knowledge of structural design codes and engineering standards.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple projects and project objectives simultaneously.

DESIRED:

  • Conversant with nuclear design and manufacturing procedures.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing tooling and equipment under ISO 9001 or NQA-1 Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for cross-functional teamwork.
  • Knowledge of applying relevant EH&S to legislation.
  • Possess basic business acumen and commercial awareness.
