Leadership Thesis

It is all about setting up our employee owners (specifically our operations teams) for success and the Senior Estimator is often called upon to clear the sidewalk by leading with a sense of urgency with limited support and lofty expectations.



What You'll Do

This position is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of commercial, institutional, and industrial construction project proposals and bids.


Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for construction projects at various stages from conceptual to final estimate, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor and other related costs using ACC ProEst or Sage Estimating. Projects for Senior Estimators will typically range from to $15,000,000 to $80,000,000, sometimes even larger.
  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoff for input into the project estimate, experience using ACC takeoff or Bluebeam is strongly preferred.
  • Prepare the necessary bid packages with applicable bid forms and scope of work exhibits for each project.
  • Develop bidders list and invitation to bid for each project, experience using Building Connected is strongly preferred.
  • Coordinate with the Subcontractor Prequalification Coordinator to make sure that all trade partners on the bidders list are currently qualified in Trade Tapp or have submitted their questionnaire for review.
  • Confirm with (at a minimum) the Director of Estimating, Project Executive, Vice President of Operations, and General Superintendent that they agree with the trade partners listed on the bidders list. The Senior Estimator will be required to make any bidders list adjustments as deemed necessary by the project team.
  • Make phone calls to trade partners to spark interest in each project and confirm trade partner commitments for bidding.
  • Prepare P6 preconstruction schedules and staffing plans in advance of estimating the general conditions.
  • Prepare detailed general conditions and general requirements estimates for each project.
  • Organize bid/estimate review meetings with project reviewers (Director of Estimating and Project Executive at a minimum) and make revisions to the estimate, clarifications letter, schedule, and other pertinent owner deliverables as a result of these meetings.
  • Analyze architectural drawings and project specifications to obtain a deep understanding of the project requirements and to confirm project specific requirements for the scope of work exhibits.
  • Conduct risk analysis of the project and prepare mitigation strategies as it relates to cost and schedule implications.
  • Coordinate with operations on the development of the site logistics plan.
  • Collaborate with all internal and external project stakeholders including, but not limited to, project managers, architects, and clients to discuss cost estimates and resolve cost discrepancies.
  • Attend client interviews and meetings when applicable.
  • Analyze and vet subcontractor proposals to ensure completeness of scope of work.
  • Organize and manage subcontractor interviews for major trades when deemed necessary by the project team.
  • Organize and manage the Value management process in Join Build as necessary for each project.
  • Act with a sense of urgency and operate with the highest level of morals and ethics to support company culture.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in construction materials, methods, and technologies to ensure estimates are current and competitive.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with trade partners and hold them to high expectations while always "Treating Them Like Family" (a T. W. Frierson core value).
  • Utilize estimating and scheduling software and tools for accurate and efficient cost estimation.
  • Support other pre-construction department personnel as required.
  • Complete post bid analysis to benchmark project cost and help maintain the company database

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel to meetings or events within 75-mile radius of office, 1 - 2 times per month
  • Occasional travel to various project locations requiring an overnight stay, 5+ times per year

What We're Looking For


Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management or architectural engineering/design degree, or related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of work experience in commercial construction estimating is preferred.
  • Proficient in pre-construction estimating, cost analysis, and project bidding.
  • Strong understanding of construction processes and materials.
  • Exceptional analytical and mathematical skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Understanding of various units of measure (convert volume to weight, square feet to square yards, etc.).
  • Competent communication with internal and external teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Proven track record of preparing successful bids and cost estimates for construction projects.
  • Proficiency in using estimating software and other related computer applications (Primavera P6 Scheduling, Trade Tapp, Building Connected, Join, Sage Estimating, Bluebeam, and ACC Forma) is strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in MS 365 Suite products - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment including computer, printer, copier, scanner, calculator, telephone, and mobile phone/radio.
  • Must possess a valid, state-issued driver's license and be able to travel to job sites and attend meetings in person as needed. Some travel will be out of state and will require air travel. The Senior Estimator must possess a Real ID for air travel.
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday, at least eight hours per day, five days per week generally between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Flex hours are open for my discussion with the Director of Estimating.
