This position is an on-site position located in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate. The City is seeking an experienced and principled City Clerk to serve as the steward of municipal governance and legislative integrity.


Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the City Manager, the City Clerk leads the Clerk's Department and serves as a trusted advisor to City Council. This role acts as:

  • Municipal Secretary to City Council and Committees
  • Clerk to quasi-judicial boards
  • Designated Officer under the Municipal Government Act
  • FOIP Head
  • Lead authority for municipal elections and legislated advertising.

This is a pivotal leadership role at the centre of local democracy.


What you bring

You are a seasoned municipal governance professional who:

  • Brings deep expertise in parliamentary procedure and municipal legislation.
  • Is highly process-driven and detail-oriented.
  • Provides clear, impartial advice in politically sensitive environments.
  • Remains calm, composed, and confident under pressure.
  • Demonstrates exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Is guided by integrity and a genuine commitment to public service.

You understand that strong governance processes protect Council, Administration, and the community - and you take pride in getting it right.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Political Science, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of municipal government experience, including 3+ years in progressive leadership.
  • Certified or Master Municipal Clerk designation (or equivalent)
  • Please note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
