The primary role of the Mechanic is to keep a variety of equipment and vehicles operating throughout the season. Equipment includes large diesel equipment such as a Piston Bulley, Tucker Sno-Cats, Prinoth/Camoplast BR350, CAT 950H, Hammar Container Lifter, Forklift and other small equipment such as skidoos and snow blowers.
Employment Structure This is a seasonal contractor position. Communications Operators are employed by Polar Services, Inc. (Panama) and assigned to work with Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) at Union Glacier. ALE oversees recruitment, onboarding, training, and daily operational supervision.

Mechanics make a competitive daily rate, based on qualifications, certifications, and previous experience each day they are in Antarctica.

Physical Requirements
This position involves heavy work that primarily involves standing or moving for long periods of time. This position may exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 40 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents in this role typically require standing or sitting for prolonged periods, communicating with others to exchange information, repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers, shoveling, assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gasses, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperature, inadequate lighting, intense noises, and travel.
