Job Description

The primary role of the Mechanic is to keep a variety of equipment and vehicles operating throughout the season. Equipment includes large diesel equipment such as a Piston Bulley, Tucker Sno-Cats, Prinoth/Camoplast BR350, CAT 950H, Hammar Container Lifter, Forklift and other small equipment such as skidoos and snow blowers.

Employment Structure This is a seasonal contractor position. Communications Operators are employed by Polar Services, Inc. (Panama) and assigned to work with Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) at Union Glacier. ALE oversees recruitment, onboarding, training, and daily operational supervision.

ALE is a Utah company with a year‑round office in Salt Lake City, a seasonal operations support office in Punta Arenas, Chile, and several seasonal field camps in Antarctica.

Seasonal Information

Mechanics generally work from early November to late January.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The mechanical needs for a variety of heavy diesel equipment used by the mechanical services team to include the maintenance, service, re-commissioning, troubleshooting, and other needs as it related to keeping the equipment operating.
  • Assists with running the workshop and garage tent.
  • Assisting in vehicles support such as care, maintenance, service, maintain logs, operate if needed, and prepare for deployment of field vehicles.
  • Assists with the delivery of staff training for different vehicles and equipment around camp, in the field, and near the aircraft runway. 
  • Participates in a variety of hands-on general remote camp activities such as shoveling snow, melting snow, organizing stock/inventory, unloading and loading aircrafts, monitoring camp for safety issues during weather events, attending staff meetings, reporting hazards, completing reports and other end of season tasks. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have professional training and previous experience working as a diesel mechanic.
  • Adaptable to accomplish challenging tasks
  • Ability to troubleshoot machinery to include diesel engines
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work seven days a week and live in a tent in a cold weather environment.

  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English.

  • A valid passport for travel to Chile and Antarctica is required. 
  • Successfully pass a medical questionnaire reviewed by the Medical Director. 
  • Able to obtain a First Aid, CPR & AED certification prior to employment. 

Compensation and Benefits

Mechanics make a competitive daily rate, based on qualifications, certifications, and previous experience each day they are in Antarctica.

Physical Requirements

This position involves heavy work that primarily involves standing or moving for long periods of time. This position may exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 40 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents in this role typically require standing or sitting for prolonged periods, communicating with others to exchange information, repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers, shoveling, assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gasses, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperature, inadequate lighting, intense noises, and travel.
