Remote Camp Manager

The Remote Camp Manager assumes a pivotal role in orchestrating the intricate planning, efficient organization, and seamless logistical operations specifically tailored for ALE's Remote Camps. Tasked with overseeing all facets of camp operations at one of the world's most remote and challenging locations, the Remote Camp Manager leads efforts to ensure the highest standards of service delivery and safety protocols are upheld. Collaborating closely with various departments and reporting directly to the Field Operations Manager, this position demands a strong service-oriented mindset and the ability to thrive amidst the unique demands of the Antarctic interior.

 

Employment Structure This is a seasonal contractor position. Communications Operators are employed by Polar Services, Inc. (Panama) and assigned to work with Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) at Union Glacier. ALE oversees recruitment, onboarding, training, and daily operational supervision.

 

About Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) is the most experienced deep‑field operator in Antarctica, providing a wide range of air support, logistical back‑up and safety cover for governmental research programs, independent expeditions, and private visitors. ALE is a Utah company with a year‑round office in Salt Lake City, a seasonal operations support office in Punta Arenas, Chile, and several seasonal field camps in Antarctica.

 

Seasonal Information 

The Remote Camp Manager generally works from early November to late January, specific schedule is dependent upon seasonal bookings.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the planning, organization, and management of ALE's Remote Camp operations, ensuring seamless logistics and efficient camp running.
  • Liaise with Guest Services Managers to address specific client programs and requirements, ensuring exceptional service delivery and guest satisfaction.
  • Coordinate with various operational teams, including Communications, Meteorology, and Field Guide Store Supervisors, to meet remote camp operational needs effectively.
  • Collaborate with Medics on medical planning and communication, prioritizing health and safety within the remote camp environment.
  • Supervise and manage remote camp staff, providing guidance, training, and support as needed.
  • Maintain an overview of camp stock levels and liaise with Operations team on supply needs to ensure smooth operations.
  • Develop specific standard operating procedures for Remote camp operations, ensuring efficient and safe camp management.
  • Communicate with Union Glacier Operations team on remote camp operation and needs, facilitating smooth coordination between camps.
  • Compile and manage camp inventory reports, ensuring accurate record-keeping and inventory management.
  • Monitor and manage remote camp waste management procedures, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Log and report health & safety incidents to the Antarctic Operations Director, maintaining clear documentation and communication channels.
  • Assist in equipment maintenance as needed to ensure functionality and safety standards are met.
  • Provide end-of-season camp reports and individual reports, summarizing camp operations and personal contributions.
  • Attend Departmental Head meetings and participate in pre and post-camp debriefs, contributing insights and feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Participates in a variety of hands-on general remote camp activities such as shoveling snow, melting snow, organizing stock/inventory, unloading and loading aircrafts, monitoring camp for safety issues during weather events, attending staff meetings, reporting hazards, completing reports and other end of season tasks.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience of managing camps in remote and cold locations or previous work experience at ALE Strong remote camp logistics and coordination skills.
  • Field guide and facilities maintenance experience is preferred.
  • Adaptable communication skills to reach a wide variety of clients
  • Understanding of a variety of nationalities, religions, customs, and cultures represented by our clients and staff
  • Must have a current Wilderness First Responder certificate or higher-level training prior to the beginning of the season.
  • Ability to work seven days a week
  • Ability to live in a tent in a cold weather environment
  • Ability to manage people and client relations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Adaptable self-started and the ability to work independently and with oversight to complete tasks.
  • A valid passport for travel to Chile and Antarctica is required.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Physically fit and comfortable with physical labor, have the ability to live in a tent, in a cold-weather environment.
  • Successfully pass a medical questionnaire reviewed by the Medical Director.

Compensation and Benefits

The Remote Camp Manager makes a competitive day rate wage and may be eligible for a higher rate depending on qualifications, certifications, and previous experience.

Benefits include food and lodging, travel expenses, industry pro-deals, paid training and accommodations at our seasonal logistics hub in Punta Arenas, Chile, and medical services provided by our Medical Team located at Union Glacier Camp.

 

Physical Requirements 

This position involves heavy work that primarily involves walking and standing for long periods of time. This position may exert up to 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently. 

Incumbents in this role typically require communicating with others to exchange information, repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers, shoveling, assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, consistent lighting, intense noises, and travel.
