OVERVIEW
Under general supervision, the Firefighter/Paramedic plays a critical role in protecting life, property, and the well-being of the community. This position combines advanced emergency medical care with skilled firefighting operations, requiring quick decision-making, technical expertise, and a strong commitment to public service.
The Firefighter/Paramedic responds to a wide range of emergency and non-emergency incidents, including medical calls, fire suppression, rescue operations, and inter-facility patient transfers. Responsibilities include assessing and stabilizing patients, delivering high-quality pre-hospital care, and ensuring safe transport in accordance with established protocols and physician medical direction.
This role demands teamwork, adaptability, and the ability to perform effectively in high-pressure and hazardous environments. Candidates must adhere to all department policies, maintain operational readiness of equipment and apparatus, and actively participate in ongoing training to uphold the highest standards of service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Paramedic:
- Responds to select medical and traumatic emergencies, as well as hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes for inter-facility transfers.
- Provides emergency medical care at the scene, en route to the hospital, and during facility-to-facility transportation.
- Performs basic/advanced life support procedures, based upon certification level.
- Ensures the vehicle and equipment are ready for use at the beginning of the shift and after every call, including cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, restocking, and performing routine maintenance.
- Performs daily inspections of the base and/or station and conducts appropriate housekeeping duties to ensure living quarters are clean, clutter-free, and sanitary.
- Maintains all training records for recertification purposes in accordance with NREMT.
Firefighter:
- Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies.
- Leads out hose lines, selects and operates nozzles, and directs the stream of water or foam onto fires.
- Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper building levels or to assist individuals from burning structures.
- Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance using manual or mechanical tools.
- Protects property from water and smoke through salvage and overhaul procedures.
- Rescues victims from hazardous conditions and performs hazardous materials identification.
- Participates in training in current firefighting methods and techniques.
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION / EXPERIENCE
Required
- Valid Utah Driver's License.
- High School Diploma/GED.
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications.
- Utah and NREMT Paramedic.
- ACLS, BLS, and PALS Certifications.
- Certified Firefighter I & II in the State of Utah (IFSAC or ProBoard).
- Wildland Firefighter I certification (within 1 year from hire date).
Preferred
- Associate's Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or related field.
SKILLS, ABILITIES, and REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to perform effectively as a team leader in patient care situations.
- Ability to pass a physical fitness test on hiring and yearly.
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, using good judgment and common sense with a thorough understanding of emergency medical care principles.
- Must meet physical fitness requirements as established by the city and be able to perform in extreme weather conditions and IDLH atmospheres (hazardous duty).
