Job Summary
The City of St. Peters is looking to hire a motivated, dedicated, and detail-oriented Food and Health Inspector. This role is perfect for someone who communicates clearly, handles challenging situations with confidence, and takes pride in keeping our community safe. In this position, you will conduct inspections of food establishments and other regulated facilities while also serving as a trusted resource for business owners, providing guidance and education to support compliance and help local businesses thrive.
Your day starts at City Hall reviewing messages and planning inspections, then heads out into the field with a City vehicle, iPad, and mobile printer. This position goes beyond enforcement-you'll be a trusted resource for business owners, answering questions, offering practical advice, and helping them stay compliant while keeping our community safe.
Normal Shift: The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however, evening and weekend inspections are required on a rotating basis, depending on the number of special and temporary events.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine and follow-up health inspections for food service establishments, schools, senior and daycare facilities, body art and massage establishments, and temporary or mobile events
- Enforce applicable ordinances by investigating complaints, documenting findings, and preparing detailed reports
- Maintain accurate, organized, and secure inspection records and documentation
- Administer the fats, oils, and grease (FOG) program
- Respond to resident and customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a professional manner
- Stay current on food safety standards and industry updates
- Provide food code education and training to operators and stakeholders
- Exercise independent judgment in situations without clearly defined procedures, including identifying issues and recommending solutions
- Perform all duties in accordance with established City safety standards
- Complete additional assignments as needed
Minimum Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen or lawfully authorized to work in the United States
- High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience
- Food Protection Manager Certification (ServSafe) or ability to obtain within three (3) months of employment
- Certified Professional - Food Safety Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license in the state of Missouri
- Considerable knowledge of the basic principles and practices of sanitation as related to public health
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required, including on/off-hour emergencies
