Position Overview

The Residential Solar Project Manager and Designer is responsible for the design and implementation of residential photovoltaic (PV), PV plus storage projects and storage only retrofit projects, including specification of code compliant system components and installation requirements; preparation of design and permitting documentation; and coordination with crews performing the installation work; coordinating and maintaining relationships with sub-contractors. The project manager is responsible for translating a sold project into a built structure as close to the customer expectations as practically achievable and coordinating with team members and installation crews to achieve our team goals while attaining our goals of safe and high-quality PV installations. The Project Manager works collaboratively with team members to ensure that each project is properly managed from post-sale through permission to operate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct site visits and utilize site visit information to confirm the sales design and validate components (e.g. array layout, gear and conduit locations, structural needs, jurisdictional requirements, and material needs).
  • Manage the change order process swiftly with sales when required, including service changes, monitoring choices, array layout changes, rafter upgrades, etc.
  • Finalize system designs, oversee AHJ and utility approvals, outline safety and equipment needs, and estimate resources required for installation.
  • Complete the Bill of Material (BOM) prior to permitting and notify warehouse and procurement staff of special material and tool needs.
  • Work with the Operations Manager and Install Managers on resource planning, forecasting, and other operational needs.
  • Participate in new product evaluation conversations and stay current on required manufacturer trainings and certifications.
  • Assist the Residential Sales team with site visits and design questions.
  • Conduct field visits and be available during mobilization to ensure quality and resolve issues.
  • Maintain customer satisfaction through clear communication, managing expectations, and timely project delivery.
  • Ensure project documentation is up to date in the project management database and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Initiate permission to operate communication and ensure successful project turn on.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific Tasks and Deliverables)

  • Design and deliver ops design packet to the design team in a timely manner.
  • Assemble PM Report for installation team and ensure updates are available to the crew if changes are made after work order is created.
  • Participate continual process improvements, efficiency measures, and best practices conversations.
  • Keeps all aspects of the project up to date in project management database.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve project related issues, escalating when necessary.
  • Provide technical support to the Sales, Service, Installation, and Field Tech Teams
  • Foster a collaborative team spirit and work collaboratively with PMs and Field Techs to share resources and time to achieve departmental goals.

 

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Electrical licensure or NABCEP certification required (PVIP and/or ESIP).
  • Strong understanding of PV system design including ESS (batteries) (Tesla and Enphase experience preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of NEC code and residential building standards.
  • Familiarity with jurisdictional requirements for PV and ESS design.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and structural blueprints.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced, collaborative environment.
  • Proficient in: Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, Visio, AutoCad, Scanifly, Sitecapture and Salesforce
  • Detail oriented and analytical
  • Strong technical communication skills

  • Enjoys technical design and problem solving
  • Strong follow-through and time management skills

 

NON-ESSENTIAL (Valued but not required skills and experience):

  • Engineering Degree
  • Experience installing PV or ESS systems

 

Physical demands and work environment:

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Must be able to lift and climb ladders to access roofs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Driving required to site locations.

Work environment: Work environment changes from day to day. This is mostly an office role with lots of computer work and online requirements. There will be times when the Project Manager must go to project work sites and get on roofs of all pitches. High and potentially dangerous exposure to electricity. The daily temperature varies from hot to cold depending on the season.

Travel: This position is expected to travel locally up to 20% of the time.
