Job Description

Position Overview

Kauffman Eye Care is seeking a skilled and motivated Ophthalmic Technician to join our busy and growing ophthalmology practice on the east side of Indianapolis. This full-time position supports Dr. Chad Kauffman and plays an essential role in delivering high-quality patient care in a fast-paced clinical environment.

The Ophthalmic Technician assists the ophthalmologist by performing clinical testing, collecting patient data, administering treatments as directed, and ensuring efficient patient flow throughout the practice. Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:45 AM – 5:00 PM

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Testing:

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for evaluation
  • Obtain comprehensive patient histories, including medical and ocular history
  • Explain procedures and testing to patients
  • Perform diagnostic testing including visual acuity, refraction, visual fields, tonometry, OCT, pachymetry, and photography
  • Assist physicians with laser and minor surgical procedures
  • Perform accurate documentation in the electronic health record
  • Perform scribing duties when needed

Patient Flow & Communication:

  • Assist with patient triage and workflow coordination 
  • Answer patient calls regarding prescriptions and care questions -
  • Coordinate with physicians and staff to ensure efficient patient care

Equipment & Administrative Support: 

  • Maintain and clean clinical equipment 
  • Prepare exam rooms and testing equipment prior to clinic sessions 
  • Monitor supply levels and assist with inventory management 
  • Confirm patient appointments and assist with recall systems
  • Cross-train to assist with front desk duties as needed

Qualifications

Required: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Computer proficiency and ability to work in electronic medical records 
  • Professional demeanor and team-oriented attitude

Preferred: 

  • 2–5 years of ophthalmic technician experience 
  • Certification (COA, COT, or equivalent), or willingness to pursue certification
