Job Description
**What You Will Do** The Radiochemistry and Counting Team in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group (C-NR) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is responsible for the radiometric analysis of samples in support of national security and institutional programs, as well as research work in the areas of non-proliferation, radiochemistry, and nuclear physics. For these missions, the team utilizes a wide variety of gamma spectrometry, alpha spectrometry, and beta counting systems. This position will be filled at the Research Technician 2 or 3 level, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. **Research Technician 2 (54,900 - 84,300)** The selected candidate will be trained to perform tasks including loading, unloading, processing, and analyzing samples using a variety of instrumentation. Additionally, the selected candidate will help set up, maintain, and troubleshoot instrumentation. The selected candidate may also be expected to help process and prepare biological samples for liquid scintillation analysis. The selected candidate will be expected to follow established procedures, maintain quality assurance/quality control documentation, and assist with other operational needs of the team. The selected candidate should be comfortable multitasking and working with teammates as guided by a supervisor. No experience with radiation detection is required. **Research Technician 3 (66,100 - 103,600)** In addition to the responsibilities outlined for a Research Technician 2, the selected candidate should have experience independently working and performing tasks such as sample preparation in a laboratory environment and/or experience working with radiation detection equipment. The selected candidate will independently troubleshoot detection equipment and execute analytical protocols. **What You Need** **Minimum Job Requirements:** **Job Requirements for Research Technician 2:** + Experience or education working in laboratory environment or relevant education in a field such as chemistry, biology, and/or biochemistry. + Attention to detail and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. + Demonstrated knowledge working with computer systems and common applications such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. + Willingness to work in a laboratory environment with biological, chemical, and radiological samples. **Additional Job Requirements for Research Technician 3:** + Proven ability to work independently with initiative and complete assignments with minimum direction. + Demonstrated experience following documented procedures for work execution in a laboratory environment. + Proficiency in investigating solutions to problems affecting project requirements and recommending alternative approaches. + Demonstrated experience ensuring that work meets technical requirements. **Education/Experience** : The Research Technician 2 position requires a high school diploma at a minimum and 3 years or more of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. The Research Technician 3 position requires an associate's degree and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. **Desired Qualifications:** + Knowledge and/or experience using, calibrating, and/or maintaining instrumentation. + Basic knowledge and/or experience troubleshooting electronic or vacuum systems + Knowledge and/or experience working with biological, chemical, or radioactive materials in a laboratory environment. + Knowledge and/or experience using or working with established quality assurance procedures and/or use of laboratory information management system (LIMS) software. + Basic knowledge of one or more computer programming languages + Ability to obtain DOE clearance, which typically requires US citizenship. **Work Environment:** **Work Location:** The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. **Position commitment:** Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
