Job Description The Vivarium Operations Technician plays a key role in supporting vivarium operations and non-clinical study data collection within a state-of-the-art facility. This position focuses on high-quality animal care, accurate documentation, and consistent adherence to laboratory standards and procedures, contributing directly to the success of research and cell/gene therapy manufacturing activities. Responsibilities + Perform daily animal husbandry tasks, including routine cage changes and general care for study animals. + Conduct daily checks on study animals to monitor health, behavior, and overall welfare, and promptly report any concerns. + Collect and record food weight measurements for study animals according to study protocols. + Perform colony management tasks to support ongoing research needs and maintain accurate records of animal populations. + Oversee and perform routine maintenance of vivarium areas, equipment, and related systems to ensure a clean and functional environment. + Receive and properly acclimate incoming rodents according to established procedures. + Monitor vivarium environmental conditions using the Viewpoint system and report or respond to deviations as required. + Assist in daily pest control checks to maintain a safe and compliant vivarium environment. + Support the operation of cage wash equipment, autoclaves, and laundry systems to ensure consistent availability of clean cages and supplies. + Evaluate and help implement strategies to ensure operational compliance with internal and external standards. + Adhere strictly to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and study protocols during all vivarium activities. + Document all work with strict adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and Good Documentation Practices (GDP). + Handle rodents humanely and confidently, using appropriate restraint and handling techniques. + Perform additional related duties as required to support vivarium operations and study needs. Essential Skills + Prior mice handling experience is required, including confident and humane handling and restraint techniques. + Experience in laboratory animal handling and restraint techniques in a research or vivarium setting. + Strong commitment to and passion for animal welfare. + Ability to work holidays and weekends as part of the vivarium schedule. + Ability to work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating strong organizational skills. + Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities. + Strong documentation skills with excellent attention to detail, following GLPs and GDP. + Strong communication skills and ability to follow verbal instructions accurately. + Strong understanding of and ability to follow laboratory methods and SOPs. + Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Associate or bachelor's degree, preferably in a scientific field such as animal science, veterinary science, or a related discipline. + Experience or interest in animal husbandry, animal handling, animal science, animal health, vivarium operations, animal research, or veterinary-related work. + Interest in supporting cell and gene therapy manufacturing and non-clinical research activities. + Ability to adapt to new procedures and technologies in a growing, innovative environment. Work Environment This role is based in a brand new, state-of-the-art laboratory vivarium within a growing start-up environment focused on cell and gene therapy manufacturing. The technician will spend most of the day working hands-on with rodents in a controlled vivarium setting, performing animal care, monitoring, and operational tasks, with some time spent at a desk for documentation and data entry. The position involves working around cage wash equipment, autoclaves, and laundry systems, as well as using monitoring tools such as the Viewpoint system and standard office software. The schedule may include holidays and weekends to ensure continuous animal care. The environment emphasizes high standards of animal welfare, strict adherence to SOPs and GLPs, collaboration with a supportive team, and opportunities to grow within a dynamic and mission-driven research setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Columbus, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
