Job Description

Summary:

Under general supervision, this position reviews, analyzes, and abstracts data from the medical record to assign correct diagnosis and procedure codes as documented by clinicians. Accurately codes inpatient, outpatient, and clinic charts to ensure compliance with correct coding guidelines to ensure proper reimbursement. Uses ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS, and CPT codes (as appropriate).

Essential Functions:

  • Reviews, analyzes, and abstracts data from the medical record to assign correct etiologic diagnosis(es), comorbid conditions, complications, and diagnosis for interruption or death (as appropriate) on the IRF-PAI, and to assign correct principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses, and procedures on the IRF UB-04 claim form.
  • Accurately codes inpatient, outpatient, and clinic charts to ensure compliance with correct coding guidelines using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS, and CPT codes (as appropriate) to ensure correct billing and reimbursement.
  • Collaborate with PPS Coordinators and physicians to ensure that the documented etiologic diagnosis supports the Impairment Group Code (IGC).
  • Queries physicians when documentation is unclear for coding purposes, or when additional specificity or clarification is needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of a CAHIIM-accredited associate's degree, Bachelor's Degree, or certificate program specializing in Health Information Management and/or billing and coding preferred.
  • One year experience preferred (coding inpatient and outpatient charts from an acute care facility, physician practice, or other healthcare organization).
  • Inpatient IRF experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of commercial and government payer rules preferred.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate medical record clinical documentation processes preferred.





Note: Position does have capability of working remotely.


Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM EST
