Description We are looking for an accomplished Chief Financial Officer to provide strategic financial leadership for a growing legal organization in Columbia, South Carolina. This Contract position will guide financial planning, reporting, and operational decision-making across multiple practice areas while supporting continued expansion. The ideal candidate will bring strong executive judgment, a hands-on approach to financial oversight, and experience building clear reporting structures in a dynamic business environment.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the firm's financial strategy, aligning budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning with business growth objectives.
- Oversee cash flow management, capital allocation, and financial performance analysis to support sound executive decisions.
- Direct the month-end close process and ensure timely, accurate financial statements across the organization.
- Establish and refine profit-and-loss reporting for separate business entities, creating visibility into performance by practice area.
- Maintain strong controls and compliance processes for trust-related accounting and the handling of client funds within a regulated legal environment.
- Partner with the accounting team, including internal staff and external service providers, to strengthen day-to-day financial operations.
- Provide executive insight on business systems and financial processes, including oversight of accounting improvements and related implementations when needed.
- Deliver clear reporting and recommendations to leadership on profitability, operational trends, and areas for financial optimization.
- Support strategic initiatives such as expansion planning, organizational scaling, and evaluation of potential merger or acquisition activity where applicable. Requirements - Proven experience serving in a senior financial leadership role such as CFO, VP of Finance, or equivalent.
- Strong background in financial reporting, cash flow analysis, budgeting, and capital management.
- Demonstrated success leading month-end close and improving accounting accuracy in a multi-entity or complex business setting.
- Knowledge of regulated accounting practices, including strict controls related to trust or client funds.
- Ability to build meaningful performance reporting and profit-and-loss visibility across distinct business units.
- Experience partnering with internal accounting staff and external firms to support efficient financial operations.
- Familiarity with business systems and the ability to guide financial process improvements.
- Exposure to business growth strategy, operational scaling, or mergers and acquisitions is preferred.
