Boston Ballet School (BBS) is seeking a team of 50+ individuals to support the residential component our annual Summer Dance Program (SDP). A dance background is not required for this position, and individuals with a variety of backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to apply. Dates and Compensation: This is a seven-week position. RCs will spend the first week remote before being in Boston for the following six weeks. Virtual/Remote training: Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16 Staff move-in day: Monday, June 19 Student move-in day: Saturday, June 24 Student move-out day: Saturday, July 29 Staff move-out day: Sunday, July 30 In addition to a $2,700 stipend, room and board at Boston University is provided for all staff. About Summer Dance Program: SDP Is a five-week training intensive for serious ballet students and aspiring professionals between the ages of 12 and 18. Training takes place at our two studio locations in Boston and Newton, Massachusetts. Of the approximately 600 students from around the world that attend SDP, about 500 of them will be residential students. These 500 students, plus our residential team, will be housed in one of four different residence halls at Boston University. Monday through Friday, students have classes at our BBS studios roughly between the hours of 9 am and 6:30 pm. In the evenings, students participate in residential programming hosted at the dorms by the residential team. On the weekends, there is no dance programming. Instead, students participate in off-campus activities planned by Boston Ballet School or spend the weekend as they choose, so long as they follow all health and safety protocols implemented by BBS and Boston University. Residential Counselors: Residential Counselors will work (in pairs) to directly oversee groups of 17-20 students. While RCs will be primarily assigned to specific students, they are also expected to develop relationships with the larger student community. RCs live full-time at Boston University – spending each night on campus – and are first and foremost responsible for creating an exciting, safe, and nurturing environment by: Acting as role models and resources for students who may be away from home for the first time. Hosting regular social/recreational programs, either for small or large student groups. Helping students navigate roommate conflicts, homesickness, and other problems as needed, elevating serious issues to residential leadership. Being available for students, including overnight, in the case of emergencies. Hosting weekly floor meetings for their cohort. Decorating student doors and residential bulletin boards. Setting a positive tone during all interactions Enforcing all rules of BBS and its residential partner Reporting any concerns about individual student's safety and wellbeing to residential and program leadership Beyond the direct work with students in the dorms, RCs play a key role in the day-to-day operation of the program. Over the course of the program, RCs will rotate through a variety of support shifts: Residential Office (~3 occurrences): Communicating with SDP administrative staff based at the Boston/Newton studios Responding to incoming phone calls and emails from parents Processing student mail and packages Overseeing students coming and going from the dorms Being available to on-site student needs BBS Studios (~4-5 occurrences): Ensuring all students are accounted for and supervised while traveling between Boston University and Boston Ballet School studios Helping Administrative staff monitor students coming and going from the studios Supervising students on short trips during their breaks (coffee runs, lunch trips, etc.) Helping take daily attendance for residential students Taking students back to the residence hall or to emergency medical appointments (if they get sick, injured, etc.) Medical Appointment Chaperone (~1-2 occurrences): Chaperoning students to off-site appointments scheduled by program medical staff Ensuring all necessary paperwork – completed in advance by our medical staff – is brought to the appointment Making sure any updates and next steps are communicated back to program leadership and medical staff On-call Floater (~1-2 occurrences): Running any errands needed (for supplies, etc.) Extra office or studio support, additional medical appointment chaperone, etc. Weekend Activity Chaperone (~4 occurrences): Chaperoning students on larger off-campus weekend activities (planned by BBS) Candidates must understand the responsibility of taking on the roles of caregiver and role model while students are away from home. This is a full-time, rigorous commitment that is best suited towards individuals with experience and passion for working with groups of children or teens in a supervisory, teaching, counseling, or residential setting. Candidates must have: The ability to work as part of a large team of peers, where a variety of backgrounds, work styles, and personalities are represented. Comfort taking on a leadership/mentorship role for a group of adolescents. The ability to relate and communicate with empathy and compassion for students and parents. Good judgment skills and the ability to respond well in emergency situations. Resiliency and the ability to establish work-life boundaries. Turned 19 years old by the time the position begins. (i.e. born on or before June 12, 2004) At least four weeks of experience working in a supervisory role with children and/or teens. Availability to fully commit to all scheduled shifts, throughout both the day and night. (Other work or school commitments are difficult to accommodate.) CPR/First Aid/AED certification or be willing to get certified prior to the position start date. Staff members are responsible for getting themselves to Massachusetts; Boston Ballet does not provide transportation or cover travel fees.
