The challenge
MongoDB’s early talent team was expanding its scope, from hiring college interns to filling early-career roles across the entire company, all while working with a limited budget and bandwidth. Without the resources to travel to as many campuses, the team needed to move beyond a traditional on-campus playbook while still building brand awareness, hiring for diversity and converting interns into full-time hires. They also field more than 34,000 inbound applicants a year for internship roles, which was consuming significant recruiter time and hurting candidate response rates.
The solution
MongoDB embraced a virtual-first events approach, using RippleMatch’s Events product to host and promote recruiting events online and drive qualified RSVPs from across the country for the specific roles it was hiring. That let the team run more events, with higher registration and attendance, than an in-person-only strategy ever could. On the applicant side, the team centralized candidate review across every sourcing channel — its career site, Handshake and LinkedIn — using RippleMatch to surface top matches quickly.
The results
MongoDB’s early talent team cut time spent on applicant review by 50%, despite fielding more than 34,000 applicants a year for intern roles, freeing the team to focus on the human side of recruiting. Candidate response rate rose to 92%, up from 4% with manual sourcing, and the team reached 1,312 schools — well beyond its core partner-school list — hiring 48 candidates, 83% of whom identified as part of an underrepresented group.
In their words:
"With RippleMatch, applicant review is simple. You can filter by the criteria you want to view in order to review qualified candidates faster across all your inbound applicants."
